APS ANNUAL CONFERENCE APS

PAAChair welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to the official website for the 49th Annual Australian Psychological Society Conference, to be held in beautiful Hobart.

In an increasingly complex world, society often struggles to adequately meet the mental and physical health needs of the population. In addressing these needs the psychology profession has a central role.

The Conference theme of Psychology meeting society’s challenges provides an excellent opportunity for our profession to demonstrate its expert knowledge and skills in helping to solve a range of health problems.

The scientific committee is putting together a varied and interesting program of scientific and professional presentations that will engage participants via the inclusion of important and timely keynote addresses by distinguished names in the international arena, papers and posters from a wealth of talent in Australia and overseas, an exciting range of professional workshops, and those very popular ‘how to’ sessions delivered by expert practitioners.

The five star Hotel Grand Chancellor provides an excellent conference venue, right on the Hobart waterfront in the centre of the city. The hotel is approximately 15 minutes from the airport via taxi or shuttle. A range of accommodation options to suit every budget is available within walking distance.

The waterfront location offers a central departure point for many of southern Tasmania’s attractions, including the now world-famous MONA which is a brief ferry ride away, and Peppermint Bay cruises. The waterfront offers a colourful and lively weekly Saturday Salamanca market, and provides an excellent range of fine restaurants. The Coal Valley wine tour, which culminates in historic Richmond starts close by. Those conference delegates with a few days to spare will find beautiful unspoiled beaches up to Wineglass Bay and beyond on the east coast, and stunning scenery around Cradle Mountain (and everywhere in Tasmania!). Temperature daily highs in late October are variable, ranging between 15 – 26 degrees, with an average of 18-19 degrees.

Hobart 2014 offers those attending the Conference a wonderful opportunity to gain new skills and to hear about the latest research in a setting which facilitates discussion with colleagues and friends.

So, accept our invitation to attend the 49th APS Annual Conference and visit the historic city of Hobart. We are confident that you will leave the Conference and Tasmania feeling refreshed, both intellectually and psychologically.
