Conference themed day and streams

The 43rd Annual APS Conference will include themed day(s) and streams from APS Colleges.  All APS Colleges are invited to deliver a program reflecting their chosen theme. All participating APS Colleges are responsible for developing a theme/stream for the scientific program for up to two days at the conference. All submissions must be made via the online submission form.  Contact your APS College Chair if you would like to participate in a themed day(s) and/or stream(s). If you wish your presentation to be considered for a specific stream/theme you MUST indicate this when making your submission.  Please clearly indicate which APS College you wish your submission to be sent to for consideration.  The College will forward their program for a themed day or stream to the Scientific Program Committee and, in conjunction with the Chair, placement in the program will be negotiated.

In order to assist the Scientific Committee in allocating other themes within the program, you may also indicate on your submission whether you would like your paper to be considered under the various APS Interest Group themes.

Types of presentations

Symposium (1.5 hours)

Preferably, each symposium will consist of three 30 minute papers, however the convener may wish to include more presentations in the time permitted. It is expected that these symposia will be thematically linked, research-focused, and interesting to both academics and practitioners. The symposium Convener who will also Chair the session, should forward the submission form on behalf of all the presenters, together with copies of the symposium abstracts (both overall and for each individual paper). Symposium presenters should NOT submit their own abstracts individually or separately.

Individual Research Paper Session (1.5 hours)

Each individual paper will consist of a 15-minute presentation plus 5 minutes for questions. The Scientific Program Committee will integrate sets of individual papers and posters into thematic sessions of one and a half hours' duration.

Rapid Communication Poster Session (1 hour)

Poster presentations provide an opportunity for presenters and participants to interact in a less formal environment than that provided by papers or symposia. Lead by the session Chair, each presenter will summarise the main aspects of their poster in a five-minute presentation period with 2 minutes available for question time before the audience moves to the next poster. As far as possible, posters will be thematically organized.

Professional Forum (1.5 hours)

Professional (including practice) fora allow for the extended discussion of contemporary issues relevant to psychologists. Typically, they may involve a panel that speaks for a short period, followed by discussion and debate. A forum may be sponsored or organised by an APS Unit that wishes to showcase new ideas, discuss new trends, brainstorm ideas, or develop a position or an outcome. Practice fora are short, focused presentations of topics relevant to practitioners. They should demonstrate skills or techniques and permit audience participation. They should not be marketing opportunities for new products, equipment or organisations.

Workshop (Full Day and Half Day)

To maintain the high standards of workshops, there are rigorous application and refereeing procedures. In some cases invitations will be issued to individuals with expertise in selected areas and with a record of presenting quality workshops.

It is essential that all sections of the online form be completed. For a symposium or forum, only one submission is required detailing the overall abstract and the individual abstracts within the session and including all authors, presenters and other participants. Online workshop submissions must be accompanied by a hard copy Workshop Proposal Form available for download from the website or by contacting the APS Events Coordinator.
